About First Responder HAZMAT Training Course
Does your job require you to be involved in emergency response to incidents where hazardous materials or chemicals are involved?
You might be a Police Officer, Paramedic, Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), Public Works employee, or even a member of an Emergency Response Team (ERT) at a site where chemicals are found. If you do respond to any sort of release of a hazardous material, OSHA requires that you take one of five levels of training. All professions start with the First Responder Awareness (FRA) Level 1 course.
First Responder Awareness - Level 1 training is for personnel whose job requires them to respond to a release of a hazardous material, recognize the situation as one requiring specialized assistance, and call for help.

This course covers 4 hours of instruction, required by 29 CFR 1910.120(e) (3), OSHA's HAZWOPER first responder awareness level training requirements. An initial amount of training is not specified, but an annual refresher is required.
First responders at the awareness level are individuals who may discover a hazardous substance release and have been trained to initiate an emergency response sequence by notifying the proper authorities of the release. They take no further action beyond notifying the authorities.

This course is structured around the first responder awareness level training requirements outlined in the HAZWOPER regulation. Topics include:
- First responder awareness level requirements;
- Hazardous materials,
- Substances and wastes;
- Recognizing and managing HAZMAT incidents;
- The Emergency Response Guidebook (ERG);
- First responder actions and safety.
Module Quizzes and Final Exam
All module quizzes require a score of 70% to proceed forward in the course. The exam will test your knowledge on information covered throughout the course. You must make a score of at least 70% to pass this course. You will be given up to three opportunities to pass each quiz and the final exam. If you do not pass after three tries, you will be locked out of this course will no longer be able to take your Outreach training in an online format.

Upon successful completion of the course, you will receive a printable certificate of completion which is accepted by OSHA as documentation of training.

HAZWOPER Training Levels
There are 3 levels for HAZWOPER training as listed in the OSHA 1910.120 regulations. Within these 3 levels are various job functions and training requirements. Each of these levels offer HAZWOPER certification for the different job functions.

More About First Responder Awareness Level 1 Training
Operations Level 1
This level training is designed for all employees who respond to a hazardous materials emergency. First responders at the awareness level are individuals who are likely to witness or discover a hazardous substance release, and have been trained to initiate an emergency response sequence by notifying the proper authorities of the release. They would take no further action beyond notifying the authorities.
This training should be combined with company-specific training on the employer's Emergency Response Plan (ERP), including policies and procedures for employees that respond to hazardous materials emergencies.
